Poker is a card game that has many variants. It is played between two to 14 players and the goal is to win the pot, which is all the bets made during one deal. There are several ways to win the pot, including having the highest ranked poker hand. Poker is usually played with a standard pack of 52 cards, although some games use more than one pack or include jokers. The cards are ranked from high to low: Ace, King, Queen, Jack, 10, 9, 7, 6, 5, 4, and 3. There are four suits (spades, hearts, diamonds and clubs) but the rank of each suit is not fixed. Some games also allow deuces (2s) or one-eyed jacks to act as wild cards.
Each betting interval, or round, begins when a player, as designated by the rules of the poker variant being played, makes a bet. All other players must either “call” that bet by putting in at least as many chips into the pot as the player who made the bet, or raise it by adding more than that amount of money to the pot.
Once the first round of betting is complete the dealer puts three cards face up on the table that anyone can use, this is called the flop. Another betting round occurs and if you have a good hand you can raise or fold depending on the strength of your cards and what other players have.
