Players place a mandatory bet called the blind into the pot before being dealt cards. This bet can be made by calling or raising. Players may also choose to check, meaning that they will not raise or call the previous player’s bet.
Once all the cards have been revealed, the player with the best 5-card poker hand wins the money in the pot. Depending on the variant of poker, there may be one or more rounds before this happens.
While many people think of poker as a game of chance, over time the application of skills can virtually eliminate luck. This makes it a game of both chance and skill, which is why it is often considered an art form.
